Eating Disorder
What IS
Eating Disorder
Eating disorders are serious mental health conditions that affect millions of people worldwide.
They are characterized by disordered eating behaviors, negative body image, and often co-occurring mental health issues such as anxiety and depression.
Types of eating disorders include anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder, avoidant restrictive food intake disorder, other specified feeding and eating disorder, pica and rumination disorder.
Behaviors associated with eating disorders include restrictive eating or avoidance of certain foods, binge eating, purging by vomiting, laxative misuse or compulsive exercise. These behaviors can become driven in ways that appear similar to an addiction. Anorexia nervosa involves restrictive eating behaviors and a preoccupation with weight and body shape. Bulimia nervosa involves binge eating followed by purging behaviors such as vomiting or using laxatives. Binge eating disorder involves recurrent episodes of binge eating without compensatory behaviors.
Eating disorders can have serious physical and emotional consequences, including malnutrition, gastrointestinal problems, and a high risk of suicide. Eating disorders often co-occur with other psychiatric disorders most commonly mood and anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder and alcohol and drug abuse problems. Evidence suggests that genes and heritability play a part in why some people are at higher risk for an eating disorder, but these disorders can also afflict those with no family history of the condition.
They can also impact relationships, work or school performance, and overall quality of life.
Treatment should address psychological, behavioral, nutritional and other medical complications.
What we do
THERAPY
At HARMONY PLACE in Athens, Treatment for eating disorders typically involves a multidisciplinary approach, including medical management, psychotherapy, and nutritional counseling. ANOREXIA
What IS
What IS
Anorexia nervosa, often referred to simply as anorexia, is an eating disorder characterized by low weight, food restriction, body image disturbance, fear of gaining weight, and an overpowering desire to be thin. Anorexia is a term of Greek origin: an- (αν-, prefix denoting negation) and orexis (ορεξις, “appetite”), translating literally to “a loss of appetite”; the adjective nervosa indicating the functional and non-organic nature of the disorder.
Many people with anorexia see themselves as overweight even though they are, in fact, underweight. Anorexia is described as this perceptual symptom as a “disturbance in the way in which one’s body weight or shape is experienced”. They often deny that they have a problem with low weight. They may weigh themselves frequently, eat small amounts, and/or only eat certain foods.
In research and clinical settings, this symptom is called “body image disturbance”. The cause of anorexia is currently unknown. There appear to be some genetic components with identical twins more often affected than fraternal twins. Cultural factors also appear to play a role, with societies that value thinness having higher rates of the disease. Additionally, it occurs more commonly among those involved in activities that value thinness, such as high-level athletics, modelling, and dancing. Anorexia often begins following a major life-change or stress-inducing event.

BULIMIA
What IS
What IS
Bulimia nervosa, also known as simply bulimia, is an eating disorder characterized by binge eating followed by compensatory behaviors such as self-induced vomiting, excessive exercise, or the misuse of laxatives or diuretics and excessive concern with body shape and weight.
Individuals with bulimia often feel a loss of control during binge episodes and experience guilt, shame, or disgust afterwards. Rather than not eating at all, it is a cycle of behaviour where one binge eats and then forcibly makes themselves vomit to keep weight off.
Other efforts to lose weight may include the use of diuretics, stimulants, water fasting, or excessive exercise. Bulimia is frequently associated with mental disorders such as depression, anxiety, borderline
personality disorder, bipolar disorder and problems with drugs or alcohol.
Sometimes also, can have serious physical and emotional consequences, including gastrointestinal problems, electrolyte imbalances, and a higher risk of suicide. It can also impact relationships, work or school performance, and overall quality of life.
Pressure to look slim and images of supposedly perfect bodies are omnipresent in modern
society and this can also be a factor in the prevalence of the disease, which may have serious long-term health effects. Most people with bulimia are at a normal weight. The forcing of vomiting may result in thickened skin on the knuckles, breakdown of the teeth and effects on metabolic rate and caloric intake which cause thyroid dysfunction. Bulimia is more common among those who have a close relative with the condition. Other risk factors for the disease include psychological stress, cultural pressure to attain a certain body type, poor self-esteem, and obesity.
Living in a culture that commercializes or glamorizes dieting and having parental figures that fixate on weight are also risks.

OVEREATING
What IS
What IS
The compulsive overeating disorder is the result of specific patterns of thinking and feeling and is often a coping strategy in response to trauma, relationship issues, childhood problems or stressful life events including marriage, family issues or pressure at work. In response to these painful experiences, food functions as a coping mechanism, allow the person to feel momentarily detached from themselves, their emotions and their stress.
Foods high in fat and sugar can be extremely addictive because they trigger the release of feel-good chemicals such as dopamine. Dopamine is a chemical mes- senger in our brain that encourages us to repeat an action by producing feelings of pleasure or euphoria. When eating food causes the release of dopamine, the pleasure felt will override the body’s signals of fullness or physical satisfaction so the person will continue eating even though they are no longer hungry. Overeating is a common issue that affects many people. It is characterized by consuming more food than is needed for the body’s energy needs, often to the point of discomfort. While occasional overeating is normal, chronic overeating can be a sign of Compulsive Overeating – also known as Binge Eating leading to weight gain and other health problems.
Overeating can be caused by a variety of factors, including stress, boredom, and depression. In some cases, it can also be a symptom of an underlying eating disorder such as binge eating disorder.
